In this workshop, teachers will consider the ways that socio-emotional learning can be infused into STEM classrooms, with particular emphasis on opportunities within Next Generation Science Practices and in the Engineering Design Process. Many science and engineering practices have clear overlap with socio-emotional competencies as well, whether through using precise language based on data, open-mindedness, or building empathy before solve a problem. Participants will engage in activities that explicitly teach SEL skills alongside a science or engineering skill, all of which can be adapted to any level of learners from kindergarten to adult learners. Finally, participants will brainstorm other SEL and curricular connections.
