This session is led by a 12th-grade high school student who will share his experiences in classrooms with democratic structures. Democratic Applied Education is all about student voice and experience within schools. In this workshop we'll be exploring 4 ways that educators can create more meaningful classroom experiences and a more representative school environment:
1. Class Choices: Expand the existing standard secondary school subjects in the U.S. to additional fields of study centered on student interests. 2. Life Skills Classes: Develop life prep class topics and curriculums to set up students for success during and after high school. 3. School Democracy: Promote democratic values with schools such as voting on ideas, community meetings, and much more. 4. Classroom Communication: Instill positive teacher-student communication through feedback such as likes, dislikes, and improvements.
